You are right in that any other engine besides Google App engine could also be used. We would like to clarify that the apps may work more smoothly with the Google App Engine.

Google App Engine is not required for mashups. Integrated applications can use any cloud hosting platform, and in many cases mashups can be easily implemented as gadgets.
